An award-winning underwater photographer, Cat credits her
success to getting up close and personal to the largest and most
dangerous creatures on the planet.
Cat’s background as a 100-ton boat captain, an underwater
naturalist (training in marine biology from the University of
Hawaii), and her work as a rescue diver and dive-master with
over 2,000 dives to her credit puts her in elite company.
Her work, photographing the ocean’s deadliest predator, the
great white shark, was recently featured in Popular
Photography magazine.
“She has no fear underwater she kicks my butt”
says Producer Jeff Kurr. “I’ve seen her face to face with
a 500 pound Mako that wanted to take a bite out of her. She rode
on the back of a great Hammerhead to show how “gentle” they are…
I just cringed.”
SOME OF HER MOST
SUCCESSFUL AND BEST KNOWN CREDITS ARE:
Air Jaws:
Voted most popular episode in 20 years of Shark
Week by viewers, Air Jaws is one of the
highest-rated documentaries in Discovery history, and
continues to pull great numbers worldwide 9 years after its
2001 premiere.
Cat produced, directed and filmed "Air
Jaws 2", "Jaws of the
Pacific", "Shark Hunter",
"Chasing
the Great White", "Diary of a
Shark Man" , all are Discovery Channel's
highest rated "Shark Week" documentaries.
Also, "Great White Shark: Uncaged":
Cat Gennaro leads a team of divers outside of the cage with
massive great white sharks. She becomes the first woman in
the world to free-dive with these predators and narrowly
avoids attack. One of the most popular Shark Week
episodes of all time it blended natural history with reality
and featured great white sharks shot in HD, another first.
And, "Shark After Dark”:
Cat co-hosted this 2009 Shark Week episode, the first look
at what sharks do at night around the globe. First TV doc
to use thermal imaging and night vision to shoot hunting
great white sharks.
MTV’s Wildboyz:
Cat helped to launch this hit MTV series serving as field
producer and still photographer during season #1. Cat’s
expertise as an animal trainer (raising lion and tiger cubs)
helped the Wildboyz handle everything from musk ox in
Alaska to Tasmanian Devils.
"Mysteries of the SHARK Coast": Another
Discovery Channel 2 hour kick off show for "Shark Week"
2009, where Cat filmed/photographed Tiger
Sharks, Bull Sharks, Silky Sharks, Large Mantas, and Grey
Reef Sharks.
A FEW REASONS WHY
CAT IS A PIONEER IN THE FIELD:
1.) Cat was the first woman to photograph great whites
“flying” in the air to attack seals.
2.) In the waters near downtown Seattle, Cat was first to
discover massive six gills sharks that only “appear” in the
middle of the night.
3.) Cat was the first woman to dive outside of a cage with
great white sharks, makos and great hammerheads. Hoping to
show that these creatures are not crazed man-eaters, she has
a penchant for riding on the backs of these animals.
4.) Cat also used night vision and thermal imaging to film
penguins after dark.
